Polyglotton

Why this platform?

I’ve started to learn a new language recently (Hungarian), and was not sure on how to proceed. I was sure that I was not going to use any apps that try to hack your motivation, as I have tried that once before, and it quickly became about other things than actually learning.

So I started creating the tools that I needed myself to make me actually learn the things I wanted to learn at that time. I made a prototype of this app and it actually was exactly what I needed. I could have an AI create the content that I needed, and learned lots about ‘learning languages’ in the process.

Then I noticed a lot of people in my environment who were also ‘language learners’, because they want to or because they need to. And figured they might need or want something like this.

My Philosophy

I am coming to believe that the best way to learn a language is through:

  • Intrinsic motivation over extrinsic rewards. You can learn languages too for the extrinsic rewards, but it comes at a cost.
  • Emotional connection to the content or the goal. If you feel that you are learning something that is not interesting to you, you will not learn it. And if you learn with passion you will learn deeper.
  • Natural acquisition rather than forced memorization
  • REPETITION

Intrinsic motivation

This is for me the main thing that made me start disliking any other learning apps. These apps are trying to make you feel that when you’re not learning through them, you’re not doing anything useful, and they are not really tracking your progress. They just check how much time you spend on them.

So I started doing more goalsetting, and studying through that practice, the same way I learned how to program. For me that’s the most effective method of studying.
