How to Use Polyglotton

Welcome to Polyglotton! This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to start learning languages your way.

Getting Started

Step 1: Choose Your Language Pair

When you first open Polyglotton, you’ll be asked to select:

  • “I speak” – Your native language (or the language you’re most comfortable with)
  • “I’m learning” – The language you want to learn

You can change these at any time using the language selectors in the Library view.

Step 2: Explore Available Lessons

Once you’ve selected your language pair, you’ll see:

  • My Lessons – Lessons you’ve imported or downloaded
  • Available Lessons – Pre-made lessons from our catalog that match your language pair

Tap any available lesson to download it to your library. All lessons are stored locally on your device – no account needed!


The Library

Your Library is your personal collection of lessons. Here’s what you can do:

Browse Your Lessons

  • Search – Find lessons by title
  • Filter – Show All, Active (in progress), or Completed lessons
  • Language Filter – View lessons for specific language pairs

Lesson Cards

Each lesson card shows:

  • 📚 Lesson title and description
  • 🎯 Difficulty level (A1-C2)
  • 🃏 Number of cards
  • 📊 Your progress percentage

Starting a Lesson

  1. Tap on any lesson card
  2. Press Start (new lessons) or Continue (lessons in progress)
  3. Practice through interactive cards

Practicing: Card Types

Polyglotton uses a variety of interactive card types to make learning effective and engaging:

Translation Cards

Translate a phrase from your native language to your target language. Type your answer and check – multiple correct answers are accepted!

Reverse Translation Cards

Translate from your target language back to your native language. Great for testing comprehension.

Multiple Choice

Choose the correct answer from 2-4 options. Perfect for vocabulary and quick recall practice.

Fill in the Blank (Cloze)

Complete sentences by typing the missing word(s). Hints are provided when available.

Listening Cards

Listen to audio (using text-to-speech) and answer questions about what you hear. Great for ear training!

Speaking Cards

Record yourself speaking and compare to the correct pronunciation. Build confidence in speaking.

Story Cards

Read a short story in your target language, then answer comprehension questions. Context makes learning memorable!

Explanation + Practice Cards

First, read an explanation of a grammar concept or usage pattern. Then practice it immediately with an exercise.

Cultural Insight Cards

Learn about the culture behind the language – etiquette, customs, and real-world usage tips.


Progress Tracking

How Progress Works

Polyglotton uses a spaced repetition system (SRS) to help you remember what you learn:

  • ✅ Cards you answer correctly are scheduled for later review
  • ❌ Cards you get wrong are repeated at the end of the lesson
  • 📈 Your brain is always optimally challenged

Viewing Your Progress

The Progress tab shows:

  • Total lessons completed
  • Total cards practiced
  • Accuracy percentage
  • Time spent learning
  • Performance over time

Session Statistics

After completing a lesson, you’ll see:

  • Cards completed
  • Accuracy for this session
  • Time taken
  • Which cards need more practice

Creating Custom Lessons

This is where Polyglotton shines! Create lessons about anything you want to learn.

Using the Prompt Builder

  1. Go to your Library

  2. Tap Generate Lesson

  3. Fill in the form:

    • Topic – What you want to learn (e.g., “Ordering coffee in a café”)
    • Personal Context – Make it relevant to you (e.g., “I’m visiting Barcelona next month”)
    • Level – A1 (beginner) through C2 (mastery)
    • Style – Conversational, Formal, Fun, or Academic
  4. Choose a Preset:

    • Quick – 10 cards for a fast study session
    • Deep Dive – 25+ cards for comprehensive learning
    • Vocabulary – Focus on word recognition
    • Theory – Grammar explanations and practice
    • Reading – Comprehension-focused
  5. Click Copy Prompt

Generating with AI

  1. Open your favorite AI chat (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.)
  2. Paste the copied prompt
  3. The AI will generate a lesson in JSON format
  4. Copy the entire JSON response

Importing Your Lesson

  1. Back in Polyglotton, click Import Lesson
  2. Paste the JSON into the text area (or drag & drop the file)
  3. Polyglotton validates the lesson automatically
  4. Click Import to add it to your library

Pro Tip: You can edit the prompt before sending it to the AI to customize exactly what you want to learn!


Importing & Exporting Lessons

Importing Lessons

You can import lessons from:

  • JSON files – Drag and drop or browse to select
  • Clipboard – Paste JSON directly

All imported lessons are validated to ensure they work correctly.

Sharing Lessons

Want to share a lesson with a friend?

  1. Lessons are stored as JSON files
  2. Export and send the file however you like (email, messaging, etc.)
  3. They can import it into their Polyglotton

Settings

Access Settings from the ⚙️ tab to customize your experience:

Grading Settings

  • Lenient – Beginner-friendly, accepts minor typos
  • Normal – Balanced validation
  • Strict – Exact match required

Accents & Special Characters

Choose whether accents must be exact or if they can be skipped:

  • É = E (lenient)
  • É ≠ E (strict)

Audio Settings

  • Enable/disable text-to-speech
  • Adjust speech rate

Tips for Success

1. Learn What Matters to You

The best way to stay motivated is to learn content that’s personally relevant. Planning a trip? Create lessons about that destination. Starting a new job? Generate work vocabulary lessons.

2. Practice Regularly

Short, consistent sessions beat occasional long ones. Even 5-10 minutes daily builds lasting language skills.

3. Don’t Fear Mistakes

Wrong answers aren’t failures – they’re opportunities! Polyglotton repeats missed cards so you get extra practice exactly where you need it.

4. Use Context

Lessons with stories and cultural notes help you remember better. The brain loves narrative!

5. Mix It Up

Try different card types and topics to keep things fresh and challenge different language skills.


Offline Learning

Polyglotton works completely offline once lessons are downloaded:

  • ✈️ Practice on flights
  • 🚇 Study on your commute
  • 🏕️ Learn anywhere, no internet needed

Install Polyglotton as an app on your device for the best offline experience.

We believe your learning data belongs to you:

  • 🔒 All data stored locally on your device
  • 👤 No account required

Need Help?

Having trouble? Here are some common solutions:

Lesson won’t import?

  • Make sure it’s valid JSON format
  • Check that all required fields are present
  • Try generating a new lesson

Audio not working?

  • Check your device volume
  • Ensure text-to-speech is enabled in Settings
  • Some browsers may need permission for audio

Progress not saving?

  • Polyglotton uses your browser’s local storage
  • Don’t clear browser data if you want to keep progress
  • Consider installing as a PWA for more reliable storage
